Can you resubscribe a contact who opted out of HubSpot email?
Someone who opted out asks to come back, or you find a note that they want to. It's tempting to flip the switch. HubSpot deliberately makes that harder than it sounds, because an opt-out is a legal record.
Why it isn't a simple switch
When a person unsubscribes themselves, HubSpot treats that as their decision. Reversing it without their action could put you in breach of privacy and anti-spam rules. HubSpot limits what you can do, and its rules change, so check the current behaviour in your portal before you rely on any of this.
The clean way back
- Let them choose. Send them a link to your subscription preferences page, or a form with a clear opt-in tick box.
- Record it. The form or page stores the consent and the time.
- Confirm. Open the contact, check the type shows subscribed, and check the all-email opt-out is off.
What not to do
- Don't re-import them with a file that marks them subscribed. That bypasses their choice.
- Don't email them "just to check" from your marketing tool. That is still marketing email.
- Don't assume a phone call is enough unless you can show and record what they agreed to.
If they emailed you directly saying they want to be back, reply from a normal one-to-one email with your preferences link. Their own action, on your page, is the consent that counts.
