Why HubSpot marks contacts as unengaged, and what to do about it
Some contacts stop getting your marketing emails without ever unsubscribing. HubSpot treats people who have ignored a long run of emails as unengaged and can pause sending to protect your reputation. It is not an opt-out, and it is easy to mistake for one.
Unengaged is not unsubscribed
| Unsubscribed | Unengaged | |
|---|---|---|
| Who decided | The contact | HubSpot's rules about engagement |
| Can you email them? | No, never without their action | Sometimes, if you choose to include them |
| Why it matters | A legal choice to respect | A sender reputation setting |
How to see who is affected
- Check your email settings for how unengaged contacts are handled in your portal.
- Build a list of contacts with no opens or clicks over a long period.
- Compare it with a recent send to see who actually got it.
What to do
- Try once more, carefully. A short, plain "do you still want these?" email to a small group.
- Change the offer. Many people go quiet because the emails stopped being relevant.
- Let them go. A smaller, engaged list gives you better results than a large, silent one.
Don't treat silence as consent to email more. Someone who has never opened your emails may still be subscribed, but a sudden extra push is the quickest way to a spam complaint.
