How to see where people stop replying in a HubSpot sequence

Updated October 2026

A sequence is a run of emails and tasks. Most of the value, and most of the drop-off, is in a few steps. Knowing which step loses people tells you what to rewrite.

What HubSpot shows

Each sequence has performance figures: how many people were enrolled, how many were sent each step, and how many replied, booked a meeting or opted out. Open the sequence and look at the performance tab first.

Read it step by step

  1. Note how many people reached each step.
  2. Find the step where the count falls the most. That is where people stop replying or the sequence stops them.
  3. Check the unsubscribe and bounce counts. A spike there points to targeting, not wording.

What to try

  • Big loss after step one: the opener isn't landing. Shorten it and ask one question.
  • Loss at a follow-up: it may add nothing new. Give each follow-up a fresh reason to reply.
  • Replies but no meetings: the ask is too big. Offer a smaller next step.

Keep testing one thing

Change one step at a time and give it a fortnight. Changing three at once tells you nothing.
